MSC 1003 - Music in Civilization

Class 23Wednesday, April 28

We are going to change things up for the next few classes! We've made it roughly to the year 1900, and the end of the semester is in sight, so it's time to do something different.

Special Assignment #3 Zooms

But first, you can't forget about special assignment #3, which is due next Monday along with some other things. I'll be offering my usual zoom support sessions this afternoon (and on Monday, too, I guess. 😐) Click on the office hours page to sign up.

An extra page of free concerts and stuff

In regular in-person class I usually have more opportunities to talk about what my wife Melissa Smey does at Columbia University. She has a very cool job, producing classical music and jazz concerts for their 688-seat concert hall. I've made a special page that shows all of the online events they've done this year, plus their new podcast where Melissa talks to composers. Perhaps you will find something there that you will like.

The New Unit: Jazz

For the next three classes we'll to a quick survey of jazz history, learning all of the different periods and styles of jazz throughout the 20th century. At the end we'll do our last special assignment, where you listen to a jazz "mystery track" and tell me what period or style it comes from.

I've made a jazz playlist that hits the major tracks from the next few days:

YouTube / Spotify / Apple Music

Familiarizing yourself with the playlist will help you nail the last big assignment!

Assignment #50: Roots of African-American Music

With this unit we are diving deep into some of the origins of American music. Please read my online lecture on African influences in Early African-American music.

Then Assignment #50 has eleven questions for you.

This assignment will be due on the day of Class 27 (Wed, May 12).

Assignment #51: New Orleans-Style Jazz and the Swing Era

The online material for this assignment comes in two parts:

Part I: New Orleans-Style Jazz (1900-1930)
Part II: The Swing Era (1930s and 40s)

Assignment #51 asks you thirteen questions about all of this stuff.

This one is also due on the day of Class 27 (Wed May 12).
