MSC 1003 - Music in Civilization

Class 9Tuesday, September 29

Welcome back! We've still got a lot of important (and not so important) stuff on our assignment list, and we are starting our new historical period, the Baroque (1600-1750).

Assignment #9: The zooms

Since our "to-do" list was not being explicit about this due date, I pushed the deadline back one day (to tomorrow, Wed Sept 30).

There are no more zoom sessions scheduled right now. Instead you can email me the answers to a few questions and get your credit.

The questions are:
- Do you have previous music experience?
- What kind of music do you like to listen to?
- Do you subscribe to a streaming service like spotify?

Even if you are late (past Sept 30), you can still email me and get a check.

If you've already emailed me and have not received your grade yet, please be patient. I like to write back to people, so it is taking some time to get through all the responses.

Special Assignment #1

This is our first "intelligent" assignment where you need to think and write a little bit, so I would encourage you not to put it off to the last minute.

Special Assignment Number One will give you a mystery track that you have probably never heard before, and your job is to tell me something about it.

One resource that might be useful at this point is our playlists:

Medieval Unit: YouTube / Spotify / Apple Music
Renaissance Unit: YouTube / Spotify / Apple Music

Youtube Playlist for Phones (Medieval + Renaissance)

You can use these to browse through some of our more important pieces and compare them to your mystery track.

The special assignment is due on the day of Class 12 (Wed, Oct 7).

Assignment #16: Intro to Baroque

Our online introduction to the Baroque comes in two pages:

Part I: General history and visual arts
Part II: New musical trends in the Baroque

Then, Assignment #16 asks you twelve questions about it.

This one is due on the day of Class 13 (Wed, Oct 14).
