MUSC 320 - Advanced Theory

Hayden Hall, Room 105, Tuesdays and Fridays 2:00-3:15
Class 17Tuesday, March 19

In this session we talked about melodic "goodness of fit" (i.e. how the melody interacts with the chord progresion in pop music.) We compared the Beatles "All My Loving" (in which the melody fits pretty well with the chords) and Guided by Voices "Teenage FBI" where they do not. The latter is an example of what theorists call the melodic-harmonic divorce.

For Friday we are planning to write short proposals for our rock papers. More details below.

The "Rock Paper"

Also on this day I gave out guidelines for the rock paper.

Chapter 10: Rock Harmony is now published in our Advanced Theory Anthology.

Remember that we want a one-page paper proposal for Friday, March 22.
