MUSC 320 - Advanced Theory

Hayden Hall, Room 105, Tuesdays and Fridays 2:00-3:15
Class 20Tuesday, April 02

OK at this point we were still doing the modes and other weird scales. I remember we did a few left-over analyses from the previous Tuesday in class (like Bartok's "Diminished Fifths").

Then we dug into extended "jazz"-type harmonies like dominant 9th chords and stuff. We analysed a Chopin Prelude that uses some extended chords and I also gave you a "quick guide" with sample chords built on C. (That's now pages 87-88 in our theory book.)

Homework #11 was due on this day.

Homework #11: New Scales and Collections

Assignment #11 asks you to spell some new kinds of scales, and look at a few pieces. This new modern stuff is now documented in chapter 13 of our theory anthology.

Here are some recordings for you to listen to:

Bartok, [Title Redacted]

Bartok, From the Island of Bali

Bartok, In Yugoslav Style

This worksheet is due today.

The "Rock Paper"

We have guidelines for the rock paper.

Chapter 10: Rock Harmony is now published in our Advanced Theory Anthology.

Remember that our one-page paper proposal was due Friday March 22. First draft due Tuesday, April 16.
