Class 3 | Friday, August 30 |
All right, this was kind of a blockbuster class. We started by reviewing our rhythm stuff, we talked about the notes on the piano, the whole steps and half steps, and we made some scales using the WWHWWWH method. After all that we did some ear-training, playing the "call and response" game both with solfège and on piano.
We got a new homework assignment, Worksheet #3.
Here is a rundown of all three current assignments.
Homework #1: Student survey
I'm getting some great survey responses but there are still a few hold-outs. The student survey asks you a few questions about your musical background, what kind of music you like, etc. If you complete it before class on Fri, Sept 6 you get an automatic 100, and after that deadline you can still do it for a 92.
Homework #2: Worksheet on Rhythms in 4/4
This one asks you to add a count to some rhythms, draw rhythms based on a count, and it has a weird exercise at the end that involves ties. All of this is covered in pp. 6-9 of our theory textbook.
Homework #2: Rhythms in 4/4 is due Tuesday, Sept 1.
Homework #3: Piano Notes, Whole Steps, and Half Steps
This worksheet quizzes you about the notes on the piano, and it asks you to count out two small distances (half steps vs. whole steps).
Due date is Fri Sept 6.
Half Step < Whole Step < Giant Step
That is almost literally true and not just a dumb music nerd joke. Almost. The tune Giant Steps features a lot of harmonic and melodic moves by thirds, which are indeed bigger than a whole step.
