MUSC 220 - Fundamentals of Music Theory

Hayden Hall, Room 105.
Tuesdays 12:30-1:45, Wednesdays 1:00-1:50, Fridays 12:30-1:45
Class 8Wednesday, January 31

A note on due dates: I just realized that there is contradictory info on Homeworks #5 + #6. The LAW of our class is that everything is due a week after it is assigned. Worksheets five and six should be due Tuesday, Feb 6. However, the physical sheets say Friday Feb 2, because I printed them before I knew that our Friday class was cancelled.

Anyway, I *would* love to get them on Friday, because that'll give me more time to grade them and get back to you, but of course you can wait until Tuesday, as is your right under the law.

This was a mixed theory & ear-training session.

  1. We reviewed the circle of fifths, trying to memorize the key signatures up to 4 sharps and 4 flats.
  2. We sang some melodies, including 2 melodies that are not in C major!
  3. We did a little treble-clef practicing at the very end.
No new homework, but we have #5 and #6 in the queue:

Homework #5: Key Signatures and the Circle of Fifths

Worksheet Numero Cinco asks you to draw some key signatures and get familiar with the circle of fifths. This is covered in chapter 9 of our theory text. Honestly you can copy most of the answers straight out of the textbook, but I'd recommend playing some kind of memory game with it instead (like write your answer, then check the text.)

This one is due Tues, Feb 6.

Worksheet #6: The Dot

Worksheet #6: The Dot is all about the little dot that we add to some notes to modify their rhythmic value. This is covered in Chapter 7 of our theory text.

This one will ALSO be due on Tues, Feb 6, because we gotta motor and get things done.
