MUSC 320 - Advanced Theory

Hayden Hall, Room 105, Tuesdays and Fridays 2:00-3:15
Class 3Friday, January 24

All right, we're back. We'll cover some "expansions" of our standard progressions flowchart, and we'll do some analysis.

Worksheet #2 is due, and we'll get a new one.

Update: We got bogged down in reviewing #2 and so Worksheet #3 is pushed back one class. Won't be due until Friday, Jan 31

Homework #2: Analysis and Inverted Seventh Chords

OK, this worksheet is two short things.

First, we'll analyze a passage from Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, first movement. Here's an audio clip for you:

Secondly I ask you to look at a few inverted seventh chords and figure out what they are, including the standard "inversion symbols" for classical music analysis. These little numbers are listed on p. 7 of our textbook. You just gotta memorize them, like so:

This one is due on Friday, Jan 24.

Worksheet #3: New Expansions in the Flowchart

Worksheet #3 asks you to do two short analyses that include our new flowchart exceptions. This topic is covered in chapter 2 of our theory textbook.

I have clips you could listen to:

Mozart Symphony No. 41 in C Major, K. 551 "Jupiter": IV. Molto allegro

Mozart, Piano Sonata in A Major, K. 331: III. Rondo alla turca

This worksheet is due Friday, 1/31.

I Made This Highly Informative Video, Yo

Some students in my Music Appreciation classes thought that this is me playing the piano, but it is a German guy named Tobias Sing. I just added the scrolling diagrams (with his permission).
